Instructions for Cleaning the Mouthpiece
1. Lightly rinse the mouthpiece in gentle running water in the sink. The water should be lukewarm. ***Be careful to only get the plastic part of the mouthpiece wet. If your mouthpiece has cork, avoid getting the cork wet during this whole process.***
2. Gently place the mouthpiece tip-down in a small glass. Pour in a mixture of 1/4 -1/3 rubbing alcohol (or white vinegar) and 2/3 - 3/4 lukewarm water, until there is enough liquid to cover the open hole on the mouthpiece. Make sure the cork is elevated above the liquid! You can also add Hydrogen Peroxide, which bubbles and helps to clear gunk off of the mouthpiece.
3. Let the mouthpiece sit for 1 - 2 minutes. When done, rinse the mouthpiece with the lukewarm running water. If you need to, gently scrub with a toothbrush. Continue rinsing until clean! Please watch this helpful video for additional tips on cleaning your mouthpiece!
Note about Mouthpiece Patches: Many students will have a MP patch placed on their mouthpiece. This is a small plastic or rubber 'sticker' that goes on the top of the mouthpiece, and prevents the upper teeth from damaging the mouthpiece, and additionally adds a bit of grip. You can clean around and over a mouthpiece patch gently, but they should be replaced every few months or so. Cleaning the mouthpiece is a great time to change the MP patch!

Instructions for Cleaning Swabs
Your student should be swabbing their instrument after every time they use it, so the swab eventually grows dirty. You can put the swab in a mesh bag or garment bag, and put it in any normal wash cycle. Cleaning it every so often helps prolong instrument life immensely. Swabs can be purchased for a few dollars on Amazon or similar music websites, so you can always buy a new one and throw the dirty one.
